The Man Upstairs

8pm (Doors 7.30pm)

In the mid eighties, when Birmingham was dancing to the beat of rock and reggae, a band emerged that was described by BRMB as 'totally unique':

The Man Upstairs. Their fusion of jazz, indie pop, harmony vocals and poignant lyrics proved to be a refreshing change to audiences and led to single releases 'Sad in my Heart' and 'Consumer Song' and an extended EP. They toured nationally with The Smith's (Morrissey praising them on Radio 1's 'Round Table') and toured the length and breadth of the UK and Europe.

Although the band split in 1986 their music remains influential and in people's hearts and now 30 years later a retrospective CD and vinyl has been released by Berlin based record company Fire Station. 'I am so pleased that finally an album is available and stunned that so many have already been sold in Japan and Europe', says lead singer Nigel Sewell aka Gerry Colvin of Terry and Gerry fame. 'I am really looking forward to playing again with the original members Rupert Knowlden and Carolyn Bennett who are brilliant. ‘The Man Upstairs will be celebrating the UK release of their album 'Home From the Picnic' by performing for the first time since 1986 at The Kitchen Garden Cafe on 28th May followed by an after show party and Brum bands 80's disco!
